Where I Stand…
Bring Fiscal Sanity to Washington
Connecticut’s fiscal problems are magnified in the federal budget proposed by Washington. Congress should be protecting future generations from excessive debt, not condemning them to pay for this generation’s mistakes. We need common sense proposals to reduce the size of the federal government while increasing its efficiency.
Grow the Economy by Reducing Taxes
The only way to stop poverty in Connecticut is to create jobs in the private sector. Increasing the number of government workers doesn’t stimulate our economy; it only increases the tax burden on already over-taxed citizens.
Secure Our Borders and Enforce Immigration Laws
Creating new laws when we have immigration law enacted is not the solution. We first must enforce the laws we already have in place before undertaking lengthy new reform legislation. This means extending a warm welcome to legal immigrants while securing our borders and coastline against those who would choose to break our laws, by coming here without permission or to do us harm. Since the beginning of the modern nation state system, control over a defined geographic area is part of what has defined a country. This means it is our government’s responsibility to enforce visa rules, while extending all the freedoms our society has to offer to our new citizens.
Defend Our Homeland
If our goal is peace in the world and to secure our homeland, our military must be strong – plain and simple. Our American soldiers need the equipment and support to do the job we ask them to do. They put their lives on the line so your family and mine can continue to live free as One Nation Under God. We must keep our promises to our brave military. They deserve to be treated well during their service and after they come home.
Reform Healthcare
Nationalized, single payer healthcare is a disastrous failure in every country that has tried it, including Canada. There are NO examples in the world where socialized medicine provides a higher quality of care than what we currently have in the United States. Healthcare in America does need reform, but creating a system with long waiting periods, a lack of choice, and poor quality is not the correct solution. It is morally wrong of this Administration to propose writing off seniors, those who are terminally ill and the very young who are sick, simply because it wants to distribute mediocre care to a greater number of people. We need sensible solutions without destroying the good in our healthcare system. Delivering lower quality, socialized medicine that places cost ahead of individual lives and the government in control of allotting the type and amount of care you receive here in the 2nd District is the wrong solution.
Educational Decisions Belong with Local Communities
A one-size fits all formula dictated by Washington will not work. Parents know what is best for their children and should remain the primary decision makers in raising their family.
Sanctity of Life
We must respect all life. A child is not a life only when it is convenient for the mother. We should not force faith-based hospitals and health-care facilities to perform abortions, nor should taxpayers be forced to pay for abortions in the United States or overseas.
Defending the Constitution
The Constitution is our contract with the government. I will not forget that it is my responsibility to follow all of it when I go to Washington to serve you, the citizens of the 2nd District.
